ah well living in south africa, mmo's arent very big... and 3 years ago when i got my adsl line i was one of my first friends to have one (third world country ftw!)
i did some research on onilne rpg's, WoW looked cool, until i found out about the $15 dollars a month subscription fee (thats a lot in my currency :P) so i was quite bleak.
anyway a few weeks later i went to my local pc store, and saw guild wars prophecies. the cover was cool, i looked at it and saw no monthly fees, so i thought, why not? i asked the cashier what he knew about it and he said some of friends played it and it was almost as good as WoW. so i got it.
3 years later and still hooked, gave WoW a bash and it doesnt compare imo

I didn't buy it, it is a gift, sits on my shelf for half a year before I installed it, because it was one of 2 games I got and I like the other game better then. now i don't play either of them ...

It was free monthly play, which was a biggie, and I heard there would be an expansion pack (EotN) and GW2. Well, still waiting for GW2...

I got tired of Blizz ignoring D2 (game & fanbase) in favor of WoW & decided to never give Blizzard my money again.
Skill based game
No fee
Made by members of Condor (BlizzNorth)
Spiritual successor to D2
Been hooked ever since.

I constantly got my ass handed to me in Warcraft 3 because i insisted on using the paladin instead of the archmage so i was looking for a new game. I went to the store with Serious Sam 2 in mind, but then i saw Eve on a box and she kinda lured me in. Yes, the hot chick sold me the game. You have to admit the millions of supermodels are something that makes GW great.
I wonder what life would have been like if i had bought Serious Sam...

Haha, pretty much the same reason for me, except without Serious Sam. I had just gone down to pick up some new games since I was getting bored of what I was playing at the time, saw Eve on the box and that was that ^_^

After I noticed the succes of WoW, I wanted to play an MMO with a friend, but without being forced to pay 15$/month. Tried a lot of 'free' MMO's, but those were truly horrifying. Ended up on GW.com. The rest is history.
I literally ordered the Prophecies CE 3 days before GW got live, without ever hearing of the game before

After playing Lineage 2, some ingame friends were trying out GW which got me interested. The no fee part made it extra interesting so I bought it.

Wanted something to bridge the gap between Age of Mythology and Age of Empires 3 so i just checked IGN for new releases and Guild Wars stuck out as something different to what i normally played.
Age of Empires 3 came out, i played it for a couple of hours then went back to Guild Wars, gotta say that it ranks up there with Zelda, Mario 3 and Pokémon as the greatest games of all time, its quite hard to find another game that measures up.

Being a fan of Blizzard, I bought WOW the day it was released and pre-purchased 6 months for $75 more. When the 6 months ran out, I said goodbye to my level 60 Paladin, 45 Hunter and 35 Warlock. I couldn't see paying every month for a game that, with other changes in my life, I could only play here or there.
A few months later, I read a very positive on-line game review about GW. Honestly, it didn't totally seem like my kind of game. Coming from WOW, the level cap seemed way too low. Eight skills seemed ridiculously limited. The get-started price was low, however, so I downloaded the game via PlayNC to give it a shot.
The rest, as they say,...

My ex-boyfriend was really into it while we were dating. He got me a trial key, and we played the 10 hours or whatever in like 2 days. So he gave me his alt account and I've been addicted ever since.
We had a lot of good times in this game, probably too much, cause gw is a great way to escape from real life issues.
Quick everyone go hug someone you love and tell them you're sorry (even though you know you're right).

Back in the day, we were playing Runescape.
Like all good players, we started getting bored after a few years. Then one day a friend said "Nah, quit Runescape, come on Guild Wars".
So I did, went into the local shop and bought Guild Wars Prophecies, I still remember the day I bought it haha. I had no idea what Guild Wars was about or anything.
Then I started playing etc, and I liked it, so I stayed. I also had that moment most of us had in thinking that pre searing was all there was to it!
Turns out my friend (met this guy when started playing Runescape) was using a 14 day trial key, so needless to say I was on my own playing the game
Oh yeah and about the instanced areas, haha! As I came from Runescape which didn't work with instances, and I was a newb at Guild Wars, and young, I was wondering if that NPC that walks down the path outside Ascalon in Pre Searing was a real human. I think I said something along the lines of "Hi, are you real?" or something LOL.
That's my story.
